How to Make Cannabis Coconut Oil: Recipe, Instructions & Video

Tiered of cooking with cannabutter? Well, today I will be showing you one of my favorite alternatives, Cannabis Infused Coconut Cooking Oil.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 ounce of ground up cannabis
  • 1 cup of coconut oil

We are also going to need a double boiler, cheese cloth and twine as well. The first step is to get the double boiler set up, you want the top pan to be barley above the water line and the water just barley boiling.  The next step is to add the cup of coconut oil to the top pan and let it melt as well as add a cup of water. While this mixture is melting, we will prepare the marijuana pouch that we will be adding.

Lay out a piece of the cheese cloth on a table (6 inches by 12 inches) and get a 2-3 foot piece of twine with a knot tied at the end. Add the 1/2 ounce of ground up cannabis in the center of the cloth. Keep this small enough so that it will fit in our bowl. Fold the cloth up like a burrito and then tie pouch together with the cooking twine until the pouch is securely fastened.

Now we will be adding the pouch to the melted coconut oil and water mixture. For best results, use a metal spoon as it will not absorb any of the mixture and is much easier to clean . Be sure to keep an eye on this, and keep the water consistently boiling the water at a very low boil. We will be leaving this mixture for several hours and will be checking in on it semi-frequently. We do not want to boil out the water in our bottom pan.

Protip: Underboiling the coconut oil is better than overboiling!

This will steep, and the THC in the marijuana will infused with the coconut oil. As you will see, the water/oil in the pan will take on a greenish/brown color. This is entirely normal and means that everything is going smoothly. The mixture will become greener as time goes on. Flip over the pouch when you check on the mixture and remember, the longer you wait, the more potent the coconut oil will be. Once I hit the 4 hour mark, I typically call it a day.

I will remove the pouch and add the coconut oil mixture to another bowl. I will then squeeze the remaining contents of the pouch into the bowl with the rest of the cooking oil. The oil was clear to begin with but should have taken on a nice green color. The oil then needs to be placed into your refrigerator or freezer to cool to let the coconut oil separate from the water. After a few hours you will see the oil and water will have completely separated. Punch a small hole through the top of the oil and pour out the water.

Once the water has been removed, you will be all set to use this cannabis cooking oil for whatever medicated treats you would like! Check out the video below which outlines the process and show us a little social media love if you enjoyed this recipe!
